I had a much older Igloo model some years ago that I liked. This unit is built heavier, with a solid, relatively quiet motor and may be used as a chest or upright like a refrigerator. Cools efficiently (pre-cooling and placing cold items in any unit is always a good idea, tho'),and is much easier/better in use than dealing with ice and its end result - water! I'd recommend this or the 26 qt version to anyone who spends a lot of time on the road and doesn't like stopping and/or paying high prices for a cold drink or sandwich. The 110V adapter is also great if you're interested in home/garage/motel/camping use.

Igloo cooler 40qt thermo electric cooler

I have seen Thermoelectric coolers demonstrated in stores and I was curious about their use and how they worked. I was able to try out their 40qt thermo-electric cooler. The first part of what is thermoelectric cooling?

I went on Wikipedia and I read the definition of thermoelectric cooling.. My understanding is that it is uses two different materials and electricity to cause the heat to flow from one plate to the other transferring the heat to other plate. There is a exhaust fan blowing out the hot air from the cooler. The cold air then comes out on the other side. I used a temperature gun which showed the exhaust heat was between 85 to 92 degrees. The inside temperature dropped down to about 40 degrees (below) of the outside temperature. A example of this that if is 75 degrees outside it gets to about 40 degrees inside.

The 40qt thermo electric cooler plugs into the 12volt dc cigarette lighter of a car. I asked Igloo to send me a AC to DC converter. I was able to observe how effective it works. I started by placing 12 water bottles inside the cooler at room temperature. It took about 3 to 4 hours to drop the temperature about 50 degrees. I let the cooler run the next day and the bottle temperature was between 38 to 40 degrees.

There are no settings on the cooler . All you have to do is plug it in the car cigarette lighter and it starts working. The directions say that it is more effective if you place cold food in the Igloo and then try to chill items at room temperature. Having used the cooler for a week I could attest that is true. The cooler will chill down any item but it will take a while. However it is very effective in keeping the food cool.

When you use this device make sure you have the car running. The manufacturer cautions that the cooler will drain a battery. The cooler use 5.8 amps of power and hours of use will drain your car battery.

This cooler is great for long trips and has enough room to carry your perishables.
There is something to be said for having something cold to drink on a hot day.

This product works as advertised. Keeps items very cool.
We set in the back of our Subaru, plug it in and away we go.
Just be sure to pre-cool for about 2 hrs before you use and place cold items it to began with.
Shipping was prompt, cooler was received in good condition.
